Is Claude safe for kids? What parents need to know

Claude is not built for kids at all: Claude.ai is for adults 18 and over, and Anthropic enforces that with detection and Yoti age checks. It scores 60 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Some protections, with crisis helplines and no ads. But there is no teen mode and there are no parental controls, and chats can be used for training unless that setting is off. See the evidence behind Claude’s score.

Claude’s age rules and sign-up

Anthropic’s Consumer Terms set a minimum age of 18, or the local age of consent to use the service if that is higher. At sign-up, users must confirm they are 18 or over. Every other app’s minimum age is in AI chatbot age limits.

Unlike most AI apps, Anthropic does not stop at a checkbox. Its Protecting the well-being of our users post says classifiers flag users who say they are minors, and that it disables accounts confirmed to belong to minors. Its Age assurance on Claude help page says flagged accounts are disabled until the user passes an age check through Yoti, by selfie age estimation, an ID document or a Yoti Digital ID. Can teens use Claude? covers the age rule in more depth.

What Claude can do that parents should know about

  • It is a general AI assistant for writing, questions and analysis, built for adults, so there are no teen-specific content filters or limits on persona features.
  • Consumer chats may be used to train Anthropic’s models unless the user turns that off. Anthropic says feedback and chats flagged for safety can still be used after opting out.
  • Anthropic publishes how long it keeps data: deleted chats leave its back-end storage within 30 days, training data may be kept de-identified for up to five years, and chats flagged for safety for up to two years.
  • Anthropic said in February 2026 that Claude will remain ad-free.

On safety, Anthropic’s Crisis helpline support page says that when a chat touches on suicide, self-harm or emotional distress, a separate system can show crisis helplines, curated by ThroughLine, in a banner or in Claude’s replies. Its Usage Policy bans sexualizing minors, including through roleplay, and bans erotic chats for all users. Shared conversations have a report button, and Anthropic has a form for reporting harmful outputs.

The parental settings Claude actually has

None. Because Claude.ai is for adults, there is no parent account linking, no time limits, no feature controls and no way for Anthropic to tell a parent about a risk. Claude parental controls explains why. What a parent can do is use the settings on the account itself:

  1. Turn off model training in Settings, then Privacy, by switching off Help improve our AI models.
  2. Delete a chat by hovering over it in the left sidebar, opening the three-dot menu, choosing Delete and confirming.
  3. If your teen opened an account, delete it in Settings, then Account, then Delete account. Cancel any Pro or Max plan first.

The gaps those settings leave

  • There is no teen experience to fall back on. A teen who gets past the age rule is using a service designed for adults.
  • Training is on until someone turns it off, and safety-flagged chats can still be used after that.
  • There are no break reminders, time limits or quiet times.
  • A parent has no view into Claude at all, and no way to be told if something serious comes up.

What to do tonight

  1. Ask your teen whether they use Claude, and on which device.
  2. If they have an account, talk about the 18+ rule and decide together whether to delete it.
  3. If they use another AI app instead, check its settings. Parental controls in every AI app covers what each app offers.
  4. Tell them that if a chat with any AI turns upsetting, they can bring it to you.

Where TeenCue fits

TeenCue does not block Claude or check anyone’s age. It is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and if claude.ai, or any other supported AI website, is used there, TeenCue shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, never the words that were typed. That tells you whether Claude is being used and roughly what for. It does not cover the Claude phone app, and your teen will know it is installed. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists every supported service.

Common questions

Is Claude safe for kids?

Claude.ai is for adults 18 and over, so it is not designed for kids. It scores 60 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Some protections: it uses age checks, shows crisis helplines and has no ads, but has no teen mode or parental controls.

Consumer chats may be used to train Anthropic’s models unless the user switches off Help improve our AI models in Settings, then Privacy. Feedback and safety-flagged chats can still be used after opting out.
