Claude parental controls
5 min read · Updated
There are no parental controls for Claude, and that is not an oversight. Anthropic restricts Claude to adults 18 and over, so there is no teen account to supervise and no family linking to set up. For a parent, the practical question is not how to configure Claude but what to do if a teenager is using a product that is not meant for them.
If you came here looking for a settings page to configure, there is not one. Claude has no parental controls, no teen accounts, no family linking and no supervised mode. The reason is simpler than a missing feature: Anthropic does not permit under-18s to use Claude at all. For the age rule itself, why Anthropic set it and whether a 16-year-old can use Claude, see can teens use Claude?.
The age rule
Anthropic states that Claude is available only to people aged 18 and over, and that users confirm they are 18 or older when setting up an account. Their stated reasoning is that younger users face a heightened risk of adverse effects from conversations with AI chatbots.
That makes Claude different in kind from ChatGPT and Gemini, both of which allow supervised teenage use and ship controls to match. Claude has no such tier. There is nothing to link, nothing to toggle and nothing to restrict, because the intended user base starts at 18. AI chatbot age limits compares Claude’s rule with other AI services.
How that is enforced
It is not only a checkbox at sign-up. Anthropic describes safety systems that look for signals an account may belong to someone under 18. When those signals appear, the account is disabled.
The user is then offered a way back: age verification through Yoti, a third-party provider, using facial age estimation from a selfie, an ID document, or a Yoti Digital ID. Anthropic states that it never sees the ID or image and receives only a pass or fail result, and that Yoti deletes the biometric data and documents immediately after verification.
For a parent, the practical read is that a teenager using Claude may at some point simply lose access, with no warning and no way for a parent to intervene, because from Anthropic’s side there is no parent on the account to tell.
What this means for a parent
Three things follow, and none of them is about configuring anything.
- If your teenager is under 18 and using Claude, they are using a product that is not intended for them. That is worth knowing even if nothing has gone wrong.
- There is no safety net on that account. No quiet hours, no content settings, no safety notice to a parent, because the product does not assume a minor is present.
- Age checks are something a teenager can attempt to pass. Facial age estimation is an estimate, and a determined seventeen-year-old may clear it. The rule is real, but it is not a guarantee.
The useful response is a conversation rather than a control panel. Family AI rules has a version you can adapt, and the specific thing worth agreeing here is which tools are in bounds at all, not just how they are used.
Where TeenCue fits, and where it does not
TeenCue does not change Claude’s age policy, grant access to Claude, or create any kind of supervised Claude account. It cannot. Anthropic’s 18+ rule is theirs and it applies regardless of what any other software is doing.
What TeenCue can do is tell you that Claude is being used at all. Claude is one of the supported services, so if a teenager opens it on a computer with the extension installed, chats appear on their page as a category and a short topic label alongside the other AI tools they use. For a product with no parental controls of its own, knowing it is in the picture is most of the value. How TeenCue works covers the setup.
If you want an AI your teen can use
ChatGPT allows accounts from 13 and has real parental controls: quiet hours, voice, memory and image generation, set from a linked parent account. Parental controls for ChatGPT walks through the setup and is honest about the limits.
Gemini can be turned on or off for a supervised Google Account through Family Link, covered in Gemini parental controls.
Both allow supervised teenage use. Neither lets a parent read conversations, which is the consistent boundary across all of them. How every major AI app handles parents covers Meta AI and Character.AI as well.
Common questions
Are there parental controls for Claude?
No. Claude has no parental controls, teen accounts, family linking or supervised mode. Anthropic restricts Claude to users aged 18 and over, so there is no minor account for a parent to supervise.
What is the minimum age for Claude?
Eighteen. Anthropic states that Claude is available only to individuals 18 years and older, and users confirm they are 18 or over when setting up an account.
Is Claude safe for teenagers?
Anthropic does not permit under-18s to use Claude, citing a heightened risk of adverse effects from AI chatbot conversations for younger users. Whatever a parent concludes about safety, the company’s own position is that it is not a product for teenagers.
What happens if Anthropic detects my teen is under 18?
Anthropic states that the account is disabled when signals suggest the user may be underage. The user is then offered age verification through Yoti, a third-party provider, and the account is reinstated if verification succeeds.
Can TeenCue give my teenager access to Claude?
No. TeenCue has no ability to change Anthropic’s age policy or grant access to anything. It can show that Claude is being used, as a category and topic label, the same way it does for other supported services.
