Claude age limit: 18+. What it means if your teen uses it

The Claude age limit is 18. Anthropic’s Consumer Terms require every Claude.ai user to be at least 18, or older where local law requires, with no teen accounts and no parent permission route. Anthropic disables accounts that show signs of belonging to someone under 18, so a teenager cannot use Claude even with a parent’s OK.

Most AI chatbots let teenagers in at 13. Claude is the exception parents ask about most, often after a teenager says a friend uses it, or after an account suddenly stops working. This guide sets out the rule, the reason Anthropic gives for it, how the rule is enforced, and what is left for a parent to do. For every AI app side by side, see parental controls in every AI app.

Claude’s age limit is 18

Anthropic’s Consumer Terms of Service, which cover Claude.ai and the Claude apps, say users must be at least 18, or the minimum age to consent in their location, whichever is higher. There is no teen tier, no parent permission route and no supervised account. Anthropic’s policy page says the same thing plainly: Claude.ai is not offered to users under 18.

That makes Claude different from ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta AI, Copilot and Grok, which all start at 13 with varying conditions. Gemini parental controls explains the Family Link switch for Google’s chatbot, and Grok parental controls covers an app that allows 13-year-olds with a parent’s permission. Character.AI also starts at 13 but has ended open-ended chat for users under 18; the Character.AI age limit guide has the detail. AI chatbot age limits has the full comparison.

Why Claude does not allow minors

In a December 2025 post on user wellbeing, Anthropic said it requires Claude.ai users to be 18 or over because younger users are at a heightened risk of adverse effects from conversations with AI chatbots. In other words, the age limit is a deliberate product decision rather than a gap the company has not got round to filling.

The practical result for families is simple. Because Claude is not meant for teenagers, Anthropic has built none of the things that come with a teen product elsewhere: no teen content setting, no parent account to link, no quiet hours and no family dashboard. Claude parental controls explains what that means if your teenager is using it anyway.

Can a 16-year-old use Claude?

Not on Claude.ai or the Claude apps. The terms set 18 as the floor, and they make no exception for a parent’s consent, for school use or for older teens.

There is one indirect route. Anthropic lets other organizations build products on its models, and its guidelines for organizations serving minors say any company that lets young people use such a product must add its own safeguards, such as age verification, content moderation and filtering, and monitoring and reporting, and must tell users they are talking to an AI. That would be another company’s product, with that company’s rules, not Claude itself.

Anthropic’s education offering does not change this. Its help center says Claude for Teachers is for educators only and has no student accounts.

How Anthropic checks age

  • Detection: Anthropic’s help center says it has safety systems that look for signs someone under 18 may be using Claude, and that it disables accounts based on indicators of minor activity.
  • Verification: an adult whose account is flagged can verify their age through a third-party provider. Anthropic says it receives only a pass or fail result.
  • App stores: in some US states, app stores now share a user’s age range with developers. Anthropic says the Claude mobile app uses that signal to block under-18 users, rolling out state by state.

None of this is perfect, and a teenager who borrows an adult’s login or signs up with a false birth date can get past a sign-up form. That is why the conversation at home still matters more than the rule.

If your teenager is using Claude anyway

  1. Ask what they use it for before deciding anything. For many teens the answer is homework or writing help.
  2. Explain the rule as a safety decision by the company, not as a judgment of them.
  3. Agree on an alternative that is meant for their age, such as ChatGPT with ChatGPT for Teens switched on and your accounts linked.
  4. If they are using an adult’s login, have that adult sign out of shared devices.
  5. Agree a few family AI rules that cover every AI app, not just this one.

Where TeenCue fits

TeenCue gives you AI parental controls that work in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer. If Claude, or any other supported AI website, is used in the browser on your teen’s computer, TeenCue shows you what a chat was about as a category, a topic and a concern rating, never the words that were typed. It does not block Claude or check anyone’s age, and your teen will know it is installed. It does not cover phones or tablets yet; the TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists the supported services.

Common questions

What is the Claude age requirement?

18. Anthropic’s Consumer Terms say users must be at least 18, or the minimum age to consent in their location, whichever is higher. There are no teen accounts and no exception for a parent’s permission.

Can teens use Claude?

No. Anthropic’s Consumer Terms require Claude.ai users to be at least 18, or older where local law requires. There are no teen accounts and no parental permission route.

Can a 13-year-old use Claude?

No. Claude is for adults only: Anthropic’s Consumer Terms set the minimum age at 18, with no teen accounts and no exception for a parent’s permission. Anthropic says it disables accounts that show signs of belonging to someone under 18.

Why can’t children use Claude?

Anthropic says it requires users to be 18 or over because younger users are at a heightened risk of adverse effects from conversations with AI chatbots. It chose not to build a teen version of Claude.

Why does Claude not allow minors?

It is a deliberate policy. Anthropic’s December 2025 wellbeing post gives the higher risk to younger users as the reason, and its policy page says Claude.ai is not offered to users under 18 and that it has built systems to detect underage use.

Can a 16-year-old use Claude?

Not on Claude.ai or the Claude apps, even with a parent’s permission. A teenager might meet Anthropic’s models inside another company’s product, which must then add its own safeguards for young users.

What happens if Claude thinks a user is under 18?

Anthropic says it disables accounts based on signs of underage use. An adult who is flagged by mistake can verify their age through a third-party provider, and Anthropic receives only a pass or fail result.

Does Claude have parental controls?

No. Because Claude is for adults only, there is no parent account, no linking and no family settings. Device and browser controls are the only way to limit it.

How do I block Claude?

Use your device’s own controls, since Claude has no parent settings. On iPhone, Screen Time can block the Claude app and limit websites. On Android phones and Chromebooks, Google Family Link can block apps. Blocking the app does not block claude.ai in a browser, so restrict the website too.
