Is Snapchat My AI safe for kids? What parents need to know
5 min read · Updated
My AI has some real protections for teens, and one useful parent switch, but its data rules are weak. It scores 53 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Some protections. Parents can stop My AI responding to their teen in Family Center, and it adjusts replies using a teen’s birthdate. But My AI chats are kept until deleted, help train My AI, and may be used to personalize ads. See the evidence behind My AI’s score.
Snapchat’s age rules and sign-up
My AI is part of Snapchat, so Snapchat’s age rules apply. Snap’s Terms of Service, effective September 21, 2026, say its services are not directed to children under 13, and a higher local minimum age applies where required. Snap’s Teens on Snapchat page says accounts for users aged 13 to 17 get safety and privacy settings on by default, private friend lists and restrictions on public profiles. Every other app’s minimum age is in AI chatbot age limits.
The same page says account creation relies on the age a user declares. Snap documents selfie, ID or bank-based age checks only for Australia’s under-16 law. Its privacy policy says Snap may use automated age-assurance tools, without saying more. So the birthday your teen entered is what Snapchat, and My AI, go on.
What My AI can do that parents should know about
- It is a chatbot built into Snapchat, available to teens unless a parent restricts it.
- Snap added an age signal based on the user’s birthdate in April 2023, so My AI takes the user’s age into account in its replies.
- Snap says My AI is programmed to avoid sexually explicit responses for all users, including minors. We found no separate rule on romantic roleplay.
- Snap says users who search for mental health topics in My AI are shown resources from expert organizations.
- We found no teen-specific limits on My AI’s persona or customization features, and no break reminders or quiet times for teens using it.
The data side is the weak part. Snap’s help page on saved content says My AI content is kept until the user deletes it, with no fixed limit, and that stored My AI chats help My AI learn and improve. We found no opt-out and no exception for minors. Snap’s My AI privacy page says My AI content may be used to personalize ads. Its teen page describes extra limits on ad targeting for teens but does not say teens get no targeted ads.
The parental settings My AI actually has
Switch My AI off in Family Center
- Link your Snapchat account to your teen’s in Family Center, if you have not already.
- In your own Snapchat profile, tap the settings gear at the top right and open Family Center.
- Restrict My AI, so it no longer responds to your teen.
Through Family Center, Snap’s January 2024 post says a linked parent can also see their teen’s friends, who they recently chatted with (without the messages), average daily time by feature, and various safety and privacy settings.
Delete past My AI chats, on your teen’s phone
- On an iPhone, go to Profile, then the settings gear, then Privacy Controls, then Delete Data, then Delete My AI Data.
- On Android, go to Settings, then Account Actions, then Delete My AI Data.
- Snap says removal from its servers can take up to 30 days.
Report a bad reply
Press and hold the My AI reply in the chat, tap Report, choose a reason and tap Submit. Snapchat My AI parental controls covers Family Center in more detail.
The gaps those settings leave
- Snap says trusted adults cannot see what is said in My AI chats, and we found no way for Snap to tell a parent if a My AI chat shows serious risk, such as self-harm.
- Family Center shows time spent, but we found no parent-set hours, quiet times or time limits.
- Deleting My AI data is something your teen, or you on their phone, has to do. Nothing deletes it automatically.
- Age rests on the birthday your teen typed, so My AI’s age signal is only as accurate as that.
- Snap’s record includes a 2014 FTC order over how it described disappearing messages and its data practices, and a 2014 agreement with the Maryland Attorney General about users under 13.
What to do tonight
- Ask your teen whether they use My AI, and what for.
- Decide together whether to keep it. If not, restrict it in Family Center.
- If they keep it, delete past My AI data together and agree to do it again from time to time.
- Check the birthday on their Snapchat account, since that is what My AI’s age signal uses.
- Look at the other AI apps on their phone. Meta AI parental controls covers the one built into Instagram and WhatsApp.
Where TeenCue fits
TeenCue does not cover Snapchat or My AI, and it cannot change any Snapchat setting. For My AI, Family Center is the tool that applies. TeenCue covers a different place: AI websites such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Character.AI, used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer. It shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, and never what was typed. Your teen will know it is there. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists every supported service.
