Meta AI parental controls: parents see topics, not chats

Meta AI parental controls let a supervising parent see the topics their teen asked about in the past seven days, but never the conversations. There is no switch that turns the Meta AI assistant off for a teen. The controls work on Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and the Meta AI app.

Most AI chatbots are something a teenager goes and finds. Meta AI is already there, inside apps many teenagers open every day. That changes the parent’s question. It is less "should my child use this?" and more "what happens when they do, and what can I see?" The answer is different in each Meta app, so this guide takes them one at a time.

What every teen gets by default

Meta’s AI terms say you cannot use its AIs if you are under the minimum age, which is 13 in most countries and higher in some. AI chatbot age limits compares this with other services. Meta places teens into Teen Accounts and says it uses technology to find people it believes are teens even if they gave an adult birthday.

Teen Accounts are placed in a 13+ content setting, and Meta says that setting also applies to conversations with Meta AI. In it, Meta AI is trained not to engage in sexual or romantic conversations with teens, and to steer away from topics such as suicide and eating disorders, pointing to help resources instead. A stricter setting, called Limited Content on Instagram and Limited on WhatsApp, restricts the topics further.

Instagram: supervision and Limited Content

Set up supervision from the Instagram app

  1. Make sure you follow your teen on Instagram. They do not have to follow you back.
  2. Open your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  3. Under For families, tap Supervision.
  4. Tap Create invite, read the screen and tap Continue.
  5. Choose Find your teen on Instagram, or send your teen a link instead.
  6. Your teen accepts the invitation. Invitations expire seven days after they are created.

On a computer, the same option is under More, then Settings, then Supervision. You can also start from Meta’s Family Center at familycenter.meta.com/supervision: tap Get started, choose the profiles to supervise, and tap Send invite. Only one parent or guardian can supervise a teen, the teen must be 13 to 17 (14 to 17 in some regions), and the parent must be over 18.

See the topics your teen asked Meta AI about

Once supervision is active, the Insights tab shows the general topics your teen asked Meta AI about on Instagram in the past seven days, such as School, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Travel, Writing or Health and Wellbeing. Tapping a topic shows narrower subtopics. Instagram says you will not see their exact questions or Meta AI’s answers.

Turn on Limited Content

Limited Content is Instagram’s strictest content setting. Instagram says that with it on, AI conversations, AI-generated images and AI content in Reels are all more restricted. A teen can move themselves to it from Teen Account settings, under What you can see, then Content setting. A supervising parent can also move them to it, and your teen needs your approval to change it back. The exact parent-side menu is not spelled out on Meta’s help pages, so check current settings in the supervision dashboard.

WhatsApp: the new parental controls

WhatsApp added parental controls for teens aged 13 to 17 on 30 September 2026. WhatsApp says they are rolling out gradually, so they may not have reached your region yet. They link a teen’s account to a parent’s, and both of you have to agree.

Link your accounts

  1. On your teen’s phone, open WhatsApp Settings, then Parental controls, then Continue.
  2. Enter your teen’s birthday.
  3. On your own phone, scan the QR code shown on your teen’s phone, confirm you are an adult and create a six-digit parent PIN.
  4. Finish the setup on your teen’s phone.

Choose the Meta AI setting

On your teen’s phone, go to Settings, then Parental controls, enter your PIN, and open Meta AI. There are two options. Standard, the default, lets your teen discuss topics broadly in line with 13+ content ratings. Limited further restricts the topics they can discuss, and turns off Meta AI features that use WhatsApp’s Private Processing. Changing the setting needs the parent PIN.

What WhatsApp does not show you

WhatsApp’s parental controls do not show what your teen asked Meta AI, and there is no topic summary like Instagram’s. Messages stay end-to-end encrypted, so a parent cannot read them. Meta AI also cannot be removed from WhatsApp: WhatsApp calls it an optional service, reached from the round Meta AI button on the Chats tab, but describes no off switch.

Your teen can delete their Meta AI chats. In a chat with Meta AI, typing /reset-ai asks Meta to delete its copy of that chat, and /reset-all-ais resets all of them, including in groups. WhatsApp says a deleted Meta AI chat cannot be restored.

Messenger: supervision and AI topics

  1. In Messenger, open Settings, then Supervision. This opens Family Center.
  2. Send your teen an invitation, or use the same Family Center invitation that covers Instagram and Facebook.
  3. Once your teen accepts, open their dashboard to see the topics they asked Meta AI about in Messenger in the past seven days.

Messenger’s supervision also lists your teen’s contacts, including the AIs they have chatted with. Messenger already uses the 13+ setting for teens. Meta said in June 2026 that Limited Content would come to Messenger and Facebook later in the year, and we found no announcement that it has arrived. Messenger Teen Accounts are still being rolled out by location.

Facebook and the Meta AI app

On Facebook, Family Center is under Menu, then Settings and privacy, then Settings, then Family Center. Meta’s April 2026 announcement says Facebook supervision has the same Insights tab, but Meta’s help center does not list Meta AI insights for Facebook, so check current settings in the app.

Since 5 October 2026, supervision is available in the Meta AI app worldwide. A parent can set it up in the app itself or in Family Center, see the topics their teen asked about, and limit the kinds of conversations their teen can have with Meta AI in the app and on the website. Meta says parents are told if their teen asks to change that setting.

When Meta tells a parent about distress

In July 2026 Meta said it would tell supervising parents if a teen’s Meta AI chat suggests they may be at risk, such as a clear reference to hurting themselves, and share expert resources to help with the conversation. Meta says every chat its AI flags is reviewed by a person first. At launch this covered parents using Instagram supervision in the US, UK, Australia and Canada, with other countries promised by the end of 2026. Meta has not said the message includes the conversation itself.

AI characters, and turning Meta AI off

Meta’s apps have also offered AI characters, separate personas people could chat with. In January 2026 Meta said it was pausing teens’ access to AI characters globally while it built an updated version, and when this guide was checked we found no announcement that access had resumed. AI boyfriend and girlfriend apps covers why companion-style chatbots deserve a separate conversation.

What no Meta app offers is a switch that turns off the Meta AI assistant for a teen. The strongest option is the Limited setting where it exists. If you do not want your teen using Meta AI at all, the honest answer is a conversation, plus whatever app limits your phone or computer allows.

The limits worth knowing

Meta’s tools are more detailed than most: a weekly topic summary is more than ChatGPT or Gemini show a parent. But each control covers only the app it is set in, only works if your teen accepts, and does nothing for ChatGPT, Gemini, Snapchat’s My AI or the other AI services a teenager can open. Parental controls in every AI app shows how the others handle it and compares the separate tools.

Where TeenCue fits

TeenCue does not replace Meta’s supervision and cannot change any Meta or WhatsApp setting. For Meta AI inside Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook or the Meta AI app, Meta’s own tools are the ones that apply. TeenCue’s AI parental controls cover a different place: AI websites used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok. Its support for the Meta AI website is being verified, so do not rely on it to cover meta.ai yet. It shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, and never what was typed. It does not cover phones or tablets, and the TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works has the detail.

Common questions

Does Meta AI have parental controls?

Yes. With Meta’s supervision tools a parent can see the topics their teen asked Meta AI about in the past seven days on Instagram, Messenger, Facebook and the Meta AI app, but not the conversations. There is no switch that turns the Meta AI assistant off.

Can parents see their teen’s Meta AI conversations?

No. On Instagram, Messenger and the Meta AI app, supervising parents can see the general topics their teen asked Meta AI about in the past seven days, but Meta says they will not see the messages or Meta AI’s replies. WhatsApp shows neither.

Does my teen have to agree to Meta AI supervision?

Yes. On Instagram a parent sends a supervision invitation and the Insights tab only appears once the teen accepts it. Setting it up together tends to go better than asking out of the blue.

How far back do Meta AI insights go?

Seven days. Supervising parents on Instagram, Messenger and the Meta AI app see the general topics their teen asked Meta AI about in the past week, not a full history and not the messages.

Can I see what my teen asks Meta AI on WhatsApp?

No. WhatsApp’s parental controls let a linked parent switch Meta AI from Standard to Limited, but they do not show topics or messages.

Can I see Meta AI topics on Facebook?

Possibly. Meta’s April 2026 announcement says Facebook supervision has the same Insights tab, but Meta’s help center does not list Meta AI insights for Facebook, so check Family Center in the app.

Can I turn off Meta AI for my teen?

No Meta app offers a parent switch that turns Meta AI off. Parents can choose the stricter Limited setting on Instagram, WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, which restricts the topics Meta AI will discuss.

Does WhatsApp have parental controls for Meta AI?

Yes, since 30 September 2026, rolling out gradually. A linked parent can switch their teen’s Meta AI setting from Standard to Limited using a parent PIN, but cannot see what was asked.

How do I set up Meta AI parental controls on Instagram?

Follow your teen, then open your profile menu, tap Supervision under For families, and create an invitation. Once your teen accepts, the Insights tab shows the topics they asked Meta AI about.

Will Meta tell me if my teen is in distress?

Meta says it tells supervising parents if a teen’s Meta AI chat suggests they may be at risk, after a person reviews it. At launch in July 2026 this was for Instagram supervision in the US, UK, Australia and Canada.

Can teens chat with Meta AI characters?

In January 2026 Meta paused teens’ access to AI characters globally while it builds an updated version, and we found no announcement that access had resumed. The main Meta AI assistant remains available to teens.
