Gemini parental controls: turn it on or off in Family Link
9 min read · Updated
Gemini parental controls are in Google Family Link, where a parent can turn Gemini on or off for a supervised child and gets an email the first time the child uses it. Google documents no way for a parent or family manager to see what a child asks or searches in Gemini. Family Link cannot manage a school account, where administrators decide.
Gemini is in more places than most parents realise: the app, the web, Android, Chrome, and increasingly inside Google Search and Workspace. The controls for it are not in Gemini itself. They live in Family Link, alongside the rest of a supervised Google Account. For every AI app side by side, see parental controls in every AI app.
Can a parent see what their teen asks Gemini?
Not according to anything Google publishes. Google’s help page on guiding a child’s Gemini Apps experience describes two things a parent gets: control over whether Gemini Apps is on or off, and an email when the child first uses it. Neither Family Link’s help pages nor the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub describes any way for a parent, or the manager of a Google family group, to view a child’s or teen’s Gemini conversations or what they searched for. When Google’s privacy pages talk about people reviewing chats, they mean Google’s own reviewers, not parents.
So the honest answer to "can the family manager see what I am searching on Gemini" is no, as far as Google documents. What a parent can see is whether Gemini is allowed, and that it has been used.
Two different roles get mixed up here. The family manager of a Google One or Google AI plan shares a subscription, nothing more: Google One’s help pages say family members cannot access each other’s files unless they are shared directly, and that the family group shows each member’s total AI credit usage, not their individual activity. That role gives no view of anyone’s Gemini chats or searches. A Family Link parent supervises a child’s account and can turn Gemini Apps on or off and get an email the first time it is used, but still cannot see what the child asks.
What you need first
The Gemini setting only exists on an account that is supervised. If your teenager has an ordinary Google Account you created for them years ago without supervision, there is no Gemini toggle to find until supervision is added.
- Make sure your child has a Google Account and that it is supervised through Family Link. Supervision can be added to an account that already exists.
- Install Family Link, or use familylink.google.com in a browser.
- Confirm you are listed as a parent on that family group.
Turning Gemini on or off
The control itself is a single switch, and Google documents the path to it:
- Open the Family Link app, or go to familylink.google.com.
- Select your child’s account.
- Go to Controls, then Gemini, then Gemini Apps.
- Turn the setting on or off.
Google states that a parent can change this at any time, and that parents are emailed when their child first uses Gemini Apps. Turning it off means the child cannot use Gemini Apps with that account. Even with it on, Google says a Google Account managed by Family Link cannot use the Gemini web app.
How this works by age
Two things are worth separating, because they are easy to conflate.
Children under 13, or the applicable age in your country, can sign in to Gemini Apps with a supervised account, and Google notes that the Keep Activity setting is not available to users under 13. Most other AI services do not allow under-13s at all; AI chatbot age limits compares them.
Supervision does not end automatically at 13. Google’s documentation says a parent can choose to stop supervision once a child reaches 13, and that a child under 18 needs a parent’s approval to stop supervision themselves. For supervised teens, the Gemini switch Google documents is for Gemini in Chrome: a parent who keeps supervision on can turn off their teen’s access to Gemini in Chrome with Family Link, and Google says users under 18 cannot use some Gemini in Chrome features at all. Google’s on and off page for Gemini Apps is written for children, so check Family Link to see which switches appear for your teen.
Teens on an ordinary Google Account can use Gemini from 13, or the applicable age in their country. Google says it adds content filters for minors signed in to their Google Account, and in March 2026 it said Gemini users under 18 get extra safeguards that cannot be turned off, including avoiding language that simulates intimacy or acts like a companion. Google also says these filters are not perfect.
Gemini on speakers and displays
Gemini for Home is managed separately, through the Google Home app rather than Family Link alone. Google’s guidance is that a child needs a supervised Google Account, needs to be added to the home, and needs to be Voice Matched for the parental controls to apply correctly. That last requirement is the one most often missed. Without Voice Match the device cannot tell which family member is speaking.
What Family Link does not give you
The honest limitation, and it is the same shape as every other platform’s: Family Link controls access. It does not show you conversations. Google’s help page for managing Gemini access documents the on/off switch and the first-use email, and says nothing about viewing what a child actually asked, because that is not a feature.
So a parent using Family Link alone has two states available: Gemini is allowed, or Gemini is not. There is no middle setting where it is allowed and you can see what it is being used for.
It also only covers Gemini. A teenager with a supervised account and Gemini switched off can still open ChatGPT in a browser, which is one reason parental controls for ChatGPT is worth setting up at the same time. Parental controls in every AI app, compared shows how the other major services handle it. Other chatbots set their own rules: Claude’s age limit is 18, Grok parental controls explains an app that allows 13-year-olds with a parent’s permission, and the Character.AI age limit is 13 with no open-ended chat for users under 18.
Where TeenCue fits
TeenCue does not replace Family Link and cannot change anything about a Google Account. Use Family Link for the access decision: whether Gemini is available at all, and for how long.
TeenCue’s AI parental controls cover the part Family Link leaves empty: when Gemini is allowed, what is it being used for. A browser extension on the computer your teen uses records a category and a short topic label for a chat, across Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude and other supported services rather than one of them. How TeenCue works has the detail.
Common questions
Does Gemini have parental controls?
Yes, through Google Family Link. A parent can turn Gemini Apps on or off for a supervised child and gets an email the first time the child uses it. Google documents no way for a parent to read the child’s Gemini chats.
Can a 13-year-old use Gemini?
Yes. Google says you must be 13 or over, or the applicable age in your country, to use Gemini with a personal Google Account. A younger child can use Gemini Apps only on a supervised Family Link account, where a parent can turn it on or off.
Can the family manager see what I search on Gemini?
Not as far as Google documents. The manager of a Google One family plan sees each member’s total AI credit usage, not individual activity, and cannot access members’ files unless they are shared. A Family Link parent can turn Gemini Apps on or off and gets an email when a child first uses it, but Google describes no way for either to view Gemini conversations or searches.
Can I see my child’s Gemini conversations through Family Link?
No. Family Link lets a parent turn Gemini Apps on or off for a supervised account and sends an email when the child first uses it. Google’s documentation does not describe any way for a parent to view the child’s Gemini conversations.
Will I know when my child starts using Gemini?
Yes, once. Google says parents are emailed the first time their child uses Gemini Apps on a supervised account. After that, Family Link does not report how often Gemini is used or what it is asked.
Do Gemini parental controls work on an iPhone?
Not through Family Link. Google says iPhones, iPads and computers other than Chromebooks cannot be supervised with Family Link, so the Gemini switch does nothing there. On those devices, Screen Time or the computer’s own controls are the only way to limit the app.
Can my child use the Gemini website on a supervised account?
No. Google says a Google Account managed by Family Link cannot use the Gemini web app, even when Gemini Apps is switched on.
Is Gemini safe for my teen?
Google adds content filters for signed-in minors, and says under-18s get extra safeguards that cannot be turned off, including avoiding language that acts like a companion. Google also says these filters are not perfect, so a conversation about how your teen uses it still matters.
Does Family Link supervision stop when my child turns 13?
Not automatically. Google states that a parent can choose to stop supervision once a child reaches 13, or the applicable age in their country, and that a child under 18 needs a parent’s approval to stop supervision themselves.
Where is the Gemini setting in Family Link?
Open the Family Link app or familylink.google.com, select your child’s account, then go to Controls, then Gemini, then Gemini Apps. The switch is there.
How do I block Gemini?
For a supervised child, turn Gemini Apps off in Family Link under Controls, then Gemini. Family Link cannot supervise an iPhone, so on an iPhone use Screen Time to block the Gemini app. Turning Gemini off does not block other AI apps.
My teen has a normal Google Account. Why is there no Gemini control?
The setting only appears on a supervised account. Supervision can be added to an existing Google Account through Family Link, after which the Gemini control becomes available.
Does turning off Gemini stop my teen using other AI tools?
No. It applies to Gemini on that Google Account only. Other services such as ChatGPT have their own separate controls, and many newer AI tools have none at all.
