Meta AI age limit: 13+. What it means if your teen uses it

The Meta AI age limit is 13, or a higher age where your country requires it. Meta does not ask for a parent’s permission, and the assistant sits inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp as well as its own app. Teens get a 13+ content setting by default, and a supervising parent can see topics, not conversations.

Most AI apps have a sign-up screen where an age rule applies. Meta AI is different, because a teenager who already has Instagram or WhatsApp already has it. So the age rule tends to matter less than the settings that come with the account. This guide sets out the rule, what changes for teens and what a parent can do. For other apps, see AI chatbot age limits and parental controls in every AI app.

How old do you have to be to use Meta AI?

At least 13. Meta’s AI terms, effective May 13, 2026, say you cannot use its AIs if you are younger than 13, or younger than a higher age your country requires. Meta has separate AI terms for the UK, the European Region and Brazil. Apple’s US App Store rates the Meta AI app 13+.

The terms we read do not make a parent’s permission a condition of use for teens at or above that age. That sets Meta AI apart from ChatGPT and Grok, whose terms ask for a parent’s permission until 18.

What changes for 13 to 17-year-olds

  • A content setting: teens get a 13+ setting by default, and a supervising parent can move them to a stricter one that Meta calls Limited Content.
  • A weekly view of topics: a supervising parent can see the topics their teen asked Meta AI about over the past seven days, under headings such as School, Entertainment, Lifestyle, and Health and Wellbeing.
  • AI characters: on January 23, 2026 Meta said it was temporarily pausing teens’ access to its existing AI characters worldwide, including for people who say they are adults but whom Meta suspects are teens. The Meta AI assistant stayed available. We found no later Meta page saying the pause has ended, so check the app if this matters to you.

Meta’s October 5, 2026 update says parental supervision is now available in the Meta AI app worldwide. The controls differ from app to app, and Meta AI parental controls takes them one at a time, including what is different on WhatsApp.

Can a parent turn Meta AI off?

Not the assistant itself, as far as Meta’s pages describe. A parent can adjust what it discusses through the content setting and see topics, but we found no switch that removes the assistant from a teen’s Instagram or Facebook. On a phone, a parent can block the separate Meta AI app with device controls, but that does not remove the assistant from Meta’s other apps.

What to do with this as a parent

  1. Check that your teen’s birth date is right on their Instagram and Facebook accounts. Teen settings depend on it.
  2. Set up supervision if you have not already. The topics view only exists once it is on.
  3. If your child is younger than 13 and has one of these accounts, that account breaks Meta’s rules, so the teen settings may not be protecting them. Talk about it before you act.
  4. Ask your teen whether they use Meta AI. It is easy to use without thinking of it as an AI app. How to talk to your teen about AI can help.

What TeenCue shows for Meta AI

Today, nothing you can count on. Support for the Meta AI website in TeenCue is still being verified, so we do not list it as supported, and TeenCue does not see Meta AI inside Instagram, Facebook, Messenger or WhatsApp. Meta’s own supervision is the tool that applies here. For the services TeenCue does support, used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, it shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, never what was typed, and your teen will know it is installed. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists the supported services.

Common questions

What is the Meta AI age limit?

The Meta AI age limit is 13, or a higher age where your country requires it. Meta’s AI terms, effective May 13, 2026, set this rule, and there are separate terms for the UK, the European Region and Brazil.

Can a 12-year-old use Meta AI?

No. Meta’s AI terms set the minimum at 13. A child who has a Meta account with a false birth date may still see it, but that breaks the terms and the teen settings may not apply.

Do teens need a parent’s permission to use Meta AI?

The terms we read do not make it a condition of use at 13 and over. Parents can set up supervision to change the content setting and see topics.

Can parents read their teen’s Meta AI chats?

No. Meta says a supervising parent can see the topics their teen asked about over the past seven days, but not the conversations themselves.

Are Meta’s AI characters available to teens?

Meta said on January 23, 2026 that it was temporarily pausing teens’ access to its existing AI characters worldwide. We found no later Meta page saying the pause has ended. The Meta AI assistant stayed available.
