Is DeepSeek safe for kids? What parents need to know
4 min read · Updated
DeepSeek has few protections for kids. It scores 24 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Few or no protections. It does not do targeted advertising and lets users delete chats, but it is meant mainly for adults, with no age checks, no teen mode and no parental controls, and it stores user data in China. See the evidence behind DeepSeek’s score.
DeepSeek’s age rules and sign-up
DeepSeek’s Terms of Use, updated March 27, 2026, say the service is primarily for adults, and that users under 18 should use it only with a legal guardian’s consent. They set no fixed minimum age, such as 13. Its Privacy Policy says the service is not aimed at children.
Neither document describes any way of checking. We found no age estimation, no ID or selfie check, no parental consent step and no teen mode or separate under-18 experience. So “primarily for adults” is a statement, not something DeepSeek enforces. AI chatbot age limits compares DeepSeek’s rule with other AI apps.
What DeepSeek can do that parents should know about
- It is a general AI chat assistant, used on the web at chat.deepseek.com.
- DeepSeek may use what users type, and what it replies, to improve its services by default. Users can turn this off in settings.
- DeepSeek says it collects, processes and stores personal data in the People’s Republic of China.
- It publishes no fixed time limit on keeping chats. Its Privacy Policy says service data, including what users type, is kept for as long as the account exists.
- Its Privacy Policy says it does not do targeted advertising.
DeepSeek’s terms ban all users from generating sexually explicit content, including sexual chatbots, and content that exploits or harms minors. They also bar chatbots that present the persona of someone under 18. The terms say DeepSeek will take protective measures for minors but do not describe any stricter filters for them, and we found no break reminders, time limits or quiet times.
Regulators have acted on DeepSeek’s handling of data. On 30 January 2025, Italy’s data protection authority ordered a limit on processing Italian users’ data, citing transparency, legal basis and storage in China; children were not among its grounds. In April 2025, South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Commission found DeepSeek had transferred users’ data abroad without a proper legal basis, and told it to destroy the prompt data it had transferred.
The parental settings DeepSeek actually has
None. We found no account linking, time limits, feature controls or way for DeepSeek to tell a parent about a risk. The only settings are on the account itself, so do these with your teen:
- In DeepSeek’s settings, turn off Improve the model for everyone, so their chats are not used to train its models.
- Delete their chat history from DeepSeek’s settings.
- If you decide the account should go, delete it. DeepSeek says that removes access to all its content.
- To report harmful or illegal content, tap the avatar and choose Contact Us.
The gaps those settings leave
- Turning off training does not change where data is stored. It is still collected and kept in China.
- Chats are kept for as long as the account exists unless your teen deletes them.
- We found no DeepSeek documentation of crisis resources being shown when self-harm comes up, and no teen or child safety page.
- There is no age check, so nothing stops a younger child signing up.
- A parent has no view into DeepSeek and no way to be told if something serious comes up.
What to do tonight
- Ask your teen whether they use DeepSeek, and why they chose it over other AI apps.
- Explain that DeepSeek says it is mainly for adults and wants a guardian’s consent for anyone under 18, so this is a decision for you both.
- If they keep using it, turn off Improve the model for everyone and delete old chats together.
- Talk about what not to type into any AI app, such as their full name, school or address. Teen AI privacy has a short list.
- Tell them that if a chat ever turns upsetting, they can come to you.
Where TeenCue fits
TeenCue cannot change any DeepSeek setting and does not block it. TeenCue is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and it covers chat.deepseek.com along with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other supported AI websites. For a chat it shows a category, a topic and a concern rating, never what was typed, so you can see whether DeepSeek is being used and roughly what for. It does not cover phone apps, and your teen will know it is there. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists every supported service.
