Gemini age limit: 13+, or younger with a parent through Family Link
5 min read · Updated
The Gemini age limit is 13, or the applicable age in your country, on a personal or school Google account, and 18 on a work account. A younger child can use Gemini only on a supervised account, after a parent turns it on in Family Link. That access is still rolling out, and it is not offered in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
Gemini has more than one age rule, because the answer depends on which kind of Google account your child is signed in to. Among the major AI chatbots, it is also the only one that makes room for children younger than 13, with conditions. This guide goes through each account type. For every other app, see AI chatbot age limits and parental controls in every AI app.
Gemini’s age rule by account type
| Account | Minimum age | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| Personal Google account | 13, or the applicable age in your country | The user, once old enough |
| Supervised child account in Family Link | Younger than 13, where available | A parent must turn it on |
| School account | 13, or the applicable age in your country | School administrators |
| Work account | 18 | The employer’s administrators |
On a personal Google account
Google says you must be 13, or the applicable age in your country, to use Gemini with a personal Google account. Those country ages come from Google’s general account rules, which set a higher age in some places. In the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, Gemini with a paid Google AI plan requires being 18. Apple’s US App Store rates the Gemini app 13+.
For minors, Google adds content filters, including ones meant to stop Gemini claiming to be a person, claiming human emotions or playing a harmful character. Google says plainly that these filters are not perfect. Is Gemini safe for kids? looks at what that means in practice.
For children younger than 13
A younger child can use Gemini only through a supervised account in Family Link, and only after a parent turns it on. Family Link is where the switch lives: Controls, then Gemini, then Gemini Apps. The parent gets an email the first time the child uses it. Three limits apply:
- Google says it is still gradually releasing this access, so it may not be available on your family’s account yet.
- It is not offered for supervised accounts in the EEA, Switzerland or the UK.
- Google has also said a Family Link account cannot use the Gemini web app, and that Hey Google and Voice Match are not available at this age.
Gemini parental controls has the setup, and what the switch does and does not do.
On a school account
The minimum age on a school account is the same 13, but school administrators control whether Gemini is on at all. That is about to become more explicit. On November 3, 2026 Google said Gemini will be off by default on K-12 student accounts until administrators turn it on, and it has not published a start date. Family Link cannot manage these accounts. Google’s new school AI rules explains the change and what to ask your school.
What to do with this as a parent
- Check which Google account your child is signed in to on each device. The rule that applies follows the account.
- Check the birth date on a personal account. The filters for minors depend on Google knowing the user is a minor.
- For a younger child, decide whether you want Gemini on at all. Leaving the switch off in Family Link is a reasonable answer.
- If you want it blocked on a Chromebook, how to block AI on a Chromebook has the steps.
What TeenCue shows for Gemini
Gemini is one of the services TeenCue supports. When your teen uses Gemini in the browser on their computer, TeenCue shows you what a chat was about as a category, a topic and a concern rating, never what was typed. It works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and school-managed Chromebooks usually block extensions the school has not approved. It does not check anyone’s age or turn Gemini on or off, and your teen will know it is installed. It does not cover the Gemini phone app yet; the TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon.
