Is Gemini safe for kids? What parents need to know
6 min read · Updated
Gemini is one of the safer mainstream AI apps for a teen, with gaps. It scores 76 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Strong protections: stricter filters for minors, crisis hotlines, and no training on under-13 chats. But a parent’s only Gemini control is on or off in Family Link, with no time limits and no word from Google if something serious comes up. See the evidence behind Gemini’s score.
Gemini’s age rules and sign-up
Google’s Gemini Apps Help page on signing in says users must be 13 or older, or the minimum age in their country, to use Gemini with a personal or school Google Account. Children younger than 13 can use it only through a Google Account their parent manages with Family Link, and a parent has to turn Gemini access on before the child can use it. Every other app’s minimum age is in AI chatbot age limits.
Google does more than take a typed birthday on trust. Its July 2025 announcement on age assurance says it uses machine learning to estimate whether an account in the US belongs to someone under 18, and a user it gets wrong can correct it with an ID or a selfie. Google’s parent guide says minors signed in to their own account get added content filters, and students under 18 on a Workspace for Education account get a separate experience with youth onboarding.
What Gemini can do that parents should know about
- It answers questions, writes, and helps with homework in a chat, on the web at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini app. How to tell if your child is using AI for homework covers that side.
- It can keep a history of chats, called Keep Activity. Google says this is on by default only for users 18 or over, and is not available to users under 13.
- People at Google can review some chats. Google’s Privacy Hub says reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, disconnected from the account.
- It has features such as memory, image generation and voice. Google’s parent guide does not describe a way for a parent to turn these off one by one.
On the safety side, Google’s April 2026 post on its mental health work says that when a chat suggests a crisis involving suicide or self-harm, Gemini shows a one-touch way to reach crisis hotlines by chat, call, text or website. The same post says Google has protections for minors that stop Gemini acting like a companion, claiming to be human or encouraging emotional dependence. Google also says Gemini chats are not used to show ads, and that it turns off personalized advertising for users it identifies as under 18.
The parental settings Gemini actually has
For a child under 13: Family Link
- Open the Family Link app on your phone and select your child.
- Go to Controls, then Gemini, then Gemini Apps.
- Choose whether Gemini is allowed. If you allow it, Google sends you an email when your child first starts using Gemini.
On a teen’s own account: privacy settings
- Sign in to gemini.google.com with your teen, and open Settings and help, then Activity.
- Choose Turn off to stop Keep Activity. Google says that with it off, future chats are not used to train its AI models unless your teen sends feedback, and chats are kept for 72 hours.
- If you leave it on, set auto-delete to 3 months instead of the 18-month default.
- To clear what is already saved, choose Delete, then All time.
- To flag a bad answer, mark the response as bad or send feedback from the app.
A teen can change these settings back, so they work best as something you set up together. Gemini parental controls goes into Family Link in more depth.
The gaps those settings leave
- Family Link is all or nothing. Google documents no way to turn off memory, image generation or voice for a child while leaving Gemini on.
- There are no Gemini-specific hours, quiet times or time limits for parents, and no built-in break reminders for teens.
- Google does not tell a parent if a chat shows serious risk, such as self-harm. The only documented parent email is the one sent when your child first starts using Gemini.
- Google’s parent guide describes no way for a parent to read a child’s Gemini chats.
- Google’s policy guidelines ban outputs that sexualize children and explicit sexual content in general, but we found no published rule against romantic roleplay with minors specifically.
What to do tonight
- Ask your child to show you Gemini, on whichever device they use it, and what they last asked it.
- If they are under 13, open Family Link and decide whether Gemini is on.
- If they are 13 or older, go through Settings and help, then Activity, together: turn off Keep Activity, or set auto-delete to 3 months.
- Tell them that if a chat ever turns to something frightening or upsetting, they can come to you, and that Gemini will show crisis hotlines but will not tell you.
- Check the other AI apps on their devices too. Teen AI privacy covers the settings worth changing on any of them.
Where TeenCue fits
Family Link decides whether Gemini can be used. TeenCue shows what it is being used for. It is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and it covers gemini.google.com along with ChatGPT, Claude, Copilot and other supported AI websites. For a chat it shows a category, a topic and a concern rating, never what was typed. It does not cover the Gemini phone app, it does not block anything, and your teen will know it is there. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists every supported service.

Gemini scores 76 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Strong protections. Google adds stricter filters for minors, shows crisis hotlines when self-harm comes up, and does not train on chats from users under 13. The main gap is that parents can only switch Gemini on or off in Family Link.
