Is Poe safe for kids? What parents need to know
4 min read · Updated
Poe has few protections for kids. It scores 20 out of 100 in the TeenCue Rating, Few or no protections. Users can delete chats and their account from Settings, but there is no teen mode and there are no parental controls, Poe’s own terms warn that its bots may produce content unsuitable for minors, and third-party bot developers may train on anonymized chats. See the evidence behind Poe’s score.
Poe’s age rules and sign-up
Poe’s Terms of Service prohibit use by anyone under 13. Users below the age of majority need a parent or legal guardian to consent to the Terms. Poe’s Privacy Policy says it may ask for a date of birth, depending on where the user lives.
That is the whole of it. We found no age estimation, no ID or selfie check and no parent approval step, and no teen mode or separate under-18 experience. A typed birthday, where Poe asks for one, is all that stands between a younger child and an adult account. AI chatbot age limits compares Poe with other AI apps.
What Poe can do that parents should know about
- Poe is a place to chat with many different bots, including bots from third-party developers and bots other users have created.
- Poe’s Terms state that bots on Poe, including third-party and user-created bots, may produce content not suitable for minors. We found no teen-specific content filters.
- Poe’s Privacy Policy says third-party developers who build bots on Poe may store users’ anonymized chats to train their models. No opt-out is described.
- We found no time limit on keeping regular chats. A limit is published only for the opt-in temporary chat mode, whose messages are deleted within 24 hours.
- Poe’s Privacy Policy describes measuring Poe ad campaigns and sharing hashed emails with advertising partners. We found no statement that Poe shows no ads or keeps minors out of targeted ads.
Poe’s Usage Guidelines ban sexually explicit or suggestive content involving minors, and ban sharing suicide or self-harm methods. But we found no published rule against sexual or romantic roleplay with users who are minors, no limits on persona or companion-style bots for teens, and no documentation of crisis resources being shown when self-harm comes up. AI companion apps and teens explains what to look for in character-style bots.
The parental settings Poe actually has
None. Poe describes no account linking, time limits, feature switches for parents or way to tell a parent about a risk. The settings on your teen’s own account are what there is:
- Delete past conversations in Settings, then Delete all chats, then confirm.
- For anything sensitive, use a temporary chat. Poe says temporary chat messages are permanently deleted within 24 hours.
- If the account should be closed, go to Settings, then Delete account. This also deletes the linked Quora account.
The gaps those settings leave
- There is no setting to stop third-party bot developers keeping anonymized chats for training.
- Nothing limits which bots a teen can talk to, including user-created ones Poe warns may not suit minors.
- We found no documented in-product way to report a harmful bot or reply. The help center links only to a bug report form, and the Terms point to email.
- A parent has no view into Poe and no way to be told if something serious comes up.
- We found no break reminders, time limits or quiet times.
What to do tonight
- Ask your teen whether they use Poe, and which bots they talk to most.
- Poe’s Terms require a parent’s consent for anyone under the age of majority. Decide together whether you give it.
- If Poe stays, delete old chats together and agree to use temporary chats for anything personal.
- Talk about bots that act like a friend or partner, and what they are designed to do.
- Tell them that if a chat ever turns upsetting, they can come to you.
Where TeenCue fits
TeenCue cannot change any Poe setting and does not block it. TeenCue is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and it covers poe.com along with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other supported AI websites. For a chat it shows a category, a topic and a concern rating, never what was typed, so you can see whether Poe is being used and roughly what for. It does not cover phone apps, and your teen will know it is there. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists every supported service.
