Grok age limit: 13+, with a parent’s permission until 18
6 min read · Updated
The Grok age limit is 13, or older if your country sets a higher minimum age. Teens aged 13 to 17 also need a parent or legal guardian’s permission, and that parent must agree to the terms and is responsible for the teen’s use. Inside the X app, X’s own terms apply instead, and they set 13 with no parental permission rule. Apple rates the Grok app 16+.
Grok’s age limit is lower than many parents expect. A teenager can use it from 13, as long as a parent says yes, even though the company’s own terms warn that Grok can produce sexual situations and violence. This guide sets out the rule in Grok’s own words, how it differs inside the X app, what the app stores say, and what a parent can do with that. For every AI app side by side, see AI chatbot age limits.
How old do you have to be to use Grok?
At least 13. Grok’s Consumer Terms of Service say you must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required in your country, to use the service, and that you must confirm you meet that minimum age. The company’s Consumer FAQs say the same: Grok is not directed to children under 13.
There is a second condition for teenagers. The terms say a teen aged 13 to 17 must have a parent or legal guardian’s permission to use Grok, and that the parent must agree to the terms too. A parent who allows it accepts the terms on the teen’s behalf and is responsible for all of the teen’s use. The privacy policy adds that parents of 13 to 17 year olds are urged to take care in monitoring their teenager’s use.
Under 13, the answer is no. The privacy policy says the company does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 and asks them not to register or use the service.
Can a 13-year-old use Grok?
Yes, within the terms, if a parent or guardian gives permission. Nothing in the documents we checked describes how that permission is collected or checked. The terms ask the user to confirm their age, and the privacy policy says Grok collects a date of birth at sign-up and before some features, without saying which ones. In practice, permission is something the family decides, not something Grok confirms with the parent.
That matters because Grok is built to go further than most chatbots. Its terms warn that, depending on the features a user picks or the language they use, Grok may respond with coarse language, crude humor, sexual situations or violence. The terms say the company applies controls and safeguards for minors as required by law, but do not describe them.
Is Grok 18+?
Not as a whole. None of the company’s general documents sets 18 as the minimum age for Grok, and none says that companions or adult content require users to be 18, with one exception: the terms say the company uses age assurance to work out whether users in Australia are under 18, and that until it can confirm a user is 18 or over they may not be able to see adult content.
Europe has no separate, higher minimum in these documents. The Europe-specific sections of the terms cover the governing law and consumer rights, not age, and the Europe privacy addendum refers to age assurance and to over-18 users for some processing without raising the minimum age.
Grok inside the X app has a different rule
Grok is also built into X, the social network formerly called Twitter. Grok’s own terms say that using Grok on X is not governed by them: to use Grok there, you agree to X’s terms instead. X’s Terms of Service say you must be at least 13 to use X, in both its US and European versions, and they contain no requirement for a parent’s permission for 13 to 17 year olds.
So the same chatbot has two sets of rules. On grok.com and in the Grok app, a 15-year-old needs a parent’s permission under the terms. Inside X, that requirement does not appear.
What the app store ratings say
| Where | Age | Parent permission for 13 to 17 |
|---|---|---|
| Grok terms (grok.com and the Grok app) | 13, or higher where local law requires | Required |
| X terms (Grok inside X) | 13 | Not mentioned |
| Apple App Store rating | 16+ | Not applicable |
| Google Play rating | Teen | Not applicable |
An app store rating is the store’s judgment of the content, not the company’s age rule. Apple rates the Grok app 16+ and lists frequent mature or suggestive themes. The gap between a 13 minimum in the terms and a 16+ rating in the App Store is worth knowing, because iPhone Screen Time can block apps above an age rating you choose.
What parents can do with the age rule
- Decide whether you give permission. Under Grok’s terms, a teen under 18 needs it, so your answer is the rule that applies.
- If you say yes, make sure your teen’s account has their real birth date, and agree which features are off limits, such as companions and image generation.
- If you say no, use device controls. On iPhone, setting Screen Time to allow apps rated 12+ or lower blocks the Grok app, which is rated 16+. On Android phones and Chromebooks, Google Family Link can block it.
- Remember the other doors: blocking the app does not block grok.com in a browser or Grok inside X.
- Explain your decision. A teenager who understands the reason is more likely to tell you if they run into something upsetting.

Where TeenCue fits
TeenCue does not check anyone’s age and does not block Grok. TeenCue’s AI parental controls cover grok.com, along with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and other supported AI websites, in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer. It shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, never what was typed, so a parent who has said yes can see whether Grok is being used and roughly what for. It does not cover the Grok phone app or Grok inside X, and the TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works has the detail.
Common questions
How old do you have to be to use Grok?
At least 13, or older if your country sets a higher minimum age. Under Grok’s terms, teens aged 13 to 17 also need a parent or legal guardian’s permission, and the parent must agree to the terms.
What is the Grok age limit?
The Grok age limit is 13. The company’s terms and FAQs say Grok is not for children under 13, and that 13 to 17 year olds need a parent’s permission.
Can a 13-year-old use Grok?
Yes, if a parent or guardian gives permission. The terms do not describe how permission is checked: the user confirms their age when they sign up.
Is Grok 18+?
No. The minimum is 13. The only 18+ rule in the company’s terms is for adult content in Australia. Apple rates the Grok app 16+.
Is the age limit different for Grok on X?
Yes. Grok inside X follows X’s terms, which require users to be at least 13 and do not mention a parent’s permission for 13 to 17 year olds.
Does Grok have parental controls?
Not in the usual sense: there is no parent account, no linking and no way for a parent to see chats. Device controls on your teen’s phone or computer are the main tool.
