Aura vs TeenCue: how they compare for AI chats

Aura Parents is a parental control and wellbeing app for iPhones, iPads and Android devices, which shows which AI chat apps a child uses and the overall tone of those chats. TeenCue covers only AI, on AI websites in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and shows what a chat was about without keeping what was typed. One covers the phone, the other the computer.

Aura and TeenCue both promise parents a view of AI chats without reading every message, so they are easy to confuse. They look in different places. Aura Parents is a full parental control app for a child’s phone or tablet, with AI as one part of a wider picture of their online wellbeing. TeenCue looks only at AI chats, on a computer. This guide is written by TeenCue, so we have tried to describe Aura as Aura describes itself, and to be just as plain about our own limits.

What Aura Parents does

Aura Parents combines traditional parental controls with what Aura calls wellbeing tools, developed with clinical psychologists. On the controls side, a parent can block apps and websites, set screen time limits for apps and categories of sites, schedule Focus Time and Bedtimes, pause the internet, and grant Bonus Time. Aura’s FAQ says parents can also view the browser history on a child’s device.

The wellbeing side is where Aura differs from most parental control apps. Messaging Insights shows where a child messages, across games, social media and texts, along with the tone, volume and timing of those messages. A Wellbeing Score, daytime and nighttime usage trends and a Weekly Snapshot are meant to help a parent notice changes and start a conversation. Aura says these build up over the first two weeks, as it learns a baseline for each child.

Aura Parents works on iPhones and iPads with iOS 16 or later and on Android devices with Android 12 or later, and one plan covers unlimited children and devices. Aura also includes Safe Gaming by Kidas, which checks gaming chats in more than 200 PC games on Windows computers. Aura sells Aura Parents on its own and as part of wider family plans that add identity theft protection and other digital security tools. Aura’s help center says its parental controls are available only to users based in the United States.

Aura and AI

Aura has three AI-related features. AI App Monitoring shows which AI chat apps a child is using and the overall tone and themes of that messaging. Its AI chat app warnings tell a parent when a child starts a conversation with an AI chat app Aura considers high-risk. And Risk Signals warn a parent when messages may indicate a risk of self-harm.

Aura describes this as insight into tone, themes and volume, measured against a baseline for each child, rather than the messages themselves. Its pages do not say which AI apps are covered, so check with Aura if a particular app matters to you. Aura also notes that its service does not monitor all content, and that its insights may not always be accurate or timely.

What TeenCue does

TeenCue is built only for AI. It is an extension for Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on your child’s computer, plus a parent dashboard on the web. When your child uses a supported AI website, TeenCue records what a chat was about: a category such as School or Personal advice, a short topic, and a concern level of Normal, Low, Moderate or Significant. Chats rated Moderate or above are grouped as worth a look. You see this on your dashboard and in a weekly summary email, and TeenCue emails you a heads-up a few minutes after a chat touches on self-harm.

TeenCue never stores what your child typed, and it does not record general browsing. It does not set time limits, block websites or filter anything. It does not cover phones or tablets, AI inside other apps such as Snapchat or Instagram, or browsers other than Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave. It is visible in your child’s browser, so they will know it is there. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon, as the parent’s app. How TeenCue works lists exactly what it records and what it does not.

The differences that matter

Phone or computer

This is the biggest difference. Aura’s parental controls run on a child’s phone or tablet. TeenCue runs in the browser on a computer. If your teen does most of their AI chatting in apps on a phone, Aura is looking in the right place and TeenCue will not see it. If they use ChatGPT or Gemini in a browser for homework on a laptop, that is where TeenCue looks.

Tone or topic

Aura tells you how AI chats feel: the tone and themes, the volume, and when something looks high-risk. TeenCue tells you what a chat was about: that most of this week’s AI use was homework, say, and that one chat about a friend may be worth a conversation. Neither shows you the messages themselves.

One tool or a whole service

Aura is a broad service: screen time, filtering, messaging insights across apps and games, and optional identity and security protection for the whole family. TeenCue does one job. That makes it simpler, and it also means it does not set limits, filter content or look beyond AI.

Which one fits your family

  • Aura may suit you if your child’s AI use mostly happens on a phone or tablet, and you also want screen time limits, filtering and a wider sense of how they are doing online.
  • TeenCue may suit you if your teen is allowed to use AI on a computer and you want to understand what it is used for, across several AI services, without reading their chats.
  • Both may suit you if your child uses AI on a phone and a computer. Aura covers the phone and TeenCue covers AI websites on the computer, and TeenCue is designed to work alongside tools like Aura, not replace them.

Whatever you choose, start with the free controls built into the AI apps themselves. Parental controls in every AI app covers each one and puts the separate tools side by side. Bark vs TeenCue and Qustodio vs TeenCue compare two other options. Prices change, so check each company’s own site for current plans.
