Janitor AI and teens: it is 18+ only. What to do if your teen uses it
4 min read · Updated
Janitor AI is 18+ only: its terms strictly prohibit anyone under 18 from using the platform or creating an account, and its help center says suspected minors are permanently banned. It is an AI role-play site built on characters made by users. We found no parental controls, so a parent’s tools are the conversation and the device.
Parents often first see the name Janitor AI on a teen’s phone or laptop, and it tells them nothing. It has nothing to do with cleaning. It is a site, and now also an iPhone app, for role-play with AI characters that users write and share. Apple’s listing describes the app as interactive stories and romance. For how this kind of app differs from a homework tool, see AI companion apps and teens, and for other apps, parental controls in every AI app.
How old do you have to be to use Janitor AI?
18. JanitorAI’s Terms of Service, last updated October 8, 2026, say the platform is intended solely for users who are at least 18, and that anyone younger is strictly prohibited from using it, creating an account or joining its communities. Its help center calls the service an adult-only space and says users reasonably suspected of being under 18 will be permanently banned. Lying about your age breaks the terms and can end the account. Apple’s US App Store rates the app 18+. The company is JanitorAI Inc.
There is no teen version and no route for a parent to give permission.
Why it is not for teens
- It is an adult space by its own description. The help center’s rules on minors refer to not-safe-for-work, sexual and romantic themes in role-play, and ban them for any character depicted as a minor. We do not reproduce that material here. The point for a parent is that the site writes rules for adult content because that content is part of what it hosts.
- Characters made by other users. What your teen meets depends on who wrote the character, and role-play can go wherever the user steers it.
- Companion design. Common Sense Media’s risk assessment of social AI companions recommends that no one under 18 use them.
- No parent view. We found no parental controls in JanitorAI’s terms or help center.
Does Janitor AI check age?
Its terms say it can terminate accounts and deny access to anyone it reasonably believes is under 18. We could not confirm from JanitorAI’s own pages what check, if any, a US user faces when signing up, so we would not count on one stopping a teenager.
If your teen is using Janitor AI
- Stay calm. Curiosity about romance and sex is normal at this age. Your reaction decides whether they tell you about the next thing.
- Ask what drew them to it and what they do there, and listen before you respond. If your teen has an AI girlfriend or boyfriend covers this conversation.
- Be clear that it is for adults, and that this is the site’s own rule.
- Ask if anything there has made them uncomfortable, and make it safe to say yes.
- Block it on their devices. On iPhone, use Apps & Websites in your child’s Family settings and add janitorai.com. On a Chromebook or Android phone, use Blocked sites under Google Chrome and Web in Family Link, plus App limits for any app.
Blocking one site will not end this, since many similar apps exist. A conversation carries over to the next one, and a block does not. If your teen seems withdrawn or relies on these chats to get through the day, talk to their doctor or a mental health professional. If you are worried about someone’s safety right now, call or text 988 in the US, or your local emergency number.
What TeenCue shows for Janitor AI
Nothing today. Janitor AI is not one of the services TeenCue supports, so a chat there does not appear on your dashboard. TeenCue covers AI websites such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Character.AI, used in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer. For those it shows a category, a topic and a concern rating for a chat, never what was typed, and your teen will know it is installed. It does not block sites. The TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. How TeenCue works lists the supported services.
