How to block ChatGPT on iPhone: the app, the website and Siri
4 min read · Updated
To block ChatGPT on your child’s iPhone, go to Settings, Family, your child’s name, then Apps & Websites, and block the ChatGPT app and the chatgpt.com website. You need both, because blocking the app leaves the website open. Then block Extensions under Siri in Content & Privacy Restrictions, because ChatGPT can also be reached through Siri.
ChatGPT can reach an iPhone by three routes: the app, the website in a browser, and Siri. Blocking one leaves the other two, which is why a parent can do this and find their child still using it a day later. These steps close all three from your own iPhone. If you would rather keep ChatGPT and put limits on it, ChatGPT parental controls may suit you better. For other apps, see parental controls in every AI app. Every other app’s minimum age is in AI chatbot age limits.
What you need first
- Family Sharing, with you as the organizer or a parent or guardian in the group.
- A Child Account for your child, which is what lets you manage their iPhone from yours.
- A Screen Time passcode your child does not know.
Step 1: block the ChatGPT app
- On your iPhone, open Settings, tap Family, then tap your child’s name.
- Tap Apps & Websites. Enter your Screen Time passcode if asked.
- Select ChatGPT. If it is not in the list, tap the Add button and search for it.
- Tap Block App, then tap again to confirm.
Apple says a blocked app is not deleted. It stays on the Home Screen, dimmed.
Step 2: block the ChatGPT website
- In the same Apps & Websites screen, tap the Add button.
- Enter chatgpt.com.
- Tap Block Website, then tap again to confirm.
For a younger child, a stricter setting closes this gap more firmly. Go to Apps & Websites, tap Restrictions, tap Filtering under Websites, choose Ask to Browse and set Approved Websites Only. Your child can then open only the sites you have approved. Apple says Ask to Browse works in Safari and other supported browser apps on iOS 27 after upgrading Screen Time, and that it is on by default for children younger than 13.
Step 3: block ChatGPT in Siri
Apple lets Siri connect to ChatGPT, separately from the app. To block that:
- Go to Settings, Family, your child’s name.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Siri.
- Set Extensions to Block.
Apple’s page says a child must be at least 13, or the minimum age in their country, to consent to using ChatGPT, which matches OpenAI’s own terms. The ChatGPT age limit has the detail.
What this does not block
- Other AI apps. Gemini, Claude, Grok, Meta AI and others each need their own block. Blocking apps by age rating can catch apps with an adult rating, but not those rated 13+, such as Gemini or Meta AI.
- Other devices. A laptop, a tablet you have not set up or a friend’s phone is not covered. How to block AI on a Chromebook covers one common one.
- Other browsers. Apple’s pages do not say a single blocked website is blocked in every browser app. If that matters, use Approved Websites Only, or block other browser apps too.
- ChatGPT inside other apps. Some apps build in AI from OpenAI or others, and these settings do not reach those.
Your teen may also see the block as a reason to look for a way around it. Telling them why you did it tends to work better than letting them find it. How to talk to your teen about AI can help.
What TeenCue shows for ChatGPT
TeenCue is a different kind of tool: it does not stop anyone using ChatGPT. When your teen uses ChatGPT in the browser on their computer, TeenCue shows you what a chat was about as a category, a topic and a concern rating, never what was typed. It works in Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Brave on a computer, and your teen will know it is installed. It does not cover iPhones yet; the TeenCue iPhone app is coming soon. Screen Time is the right tool for blocking on an iPhone today. How TeenCue works has the full picture.
Common questions
How do I block ChatGPT on my child’s iPhone?
Go to Settings, Family, your child’s name, then Apps & Websites. Block the ChatGPT app and add chatgpt.com as a blocked website. Then block Extensions under Siri in Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Does blocking the ChatGPT app also block the website?
No. They are separate, so block the app and the chatgpt.com website.
Will my child know ChatGPT is blocked?
Yes. Apple says a blocked app stays on the Home Screen, dimmed. It is usually better to tell your child why before they find out.
Can I block ChatGPT in Siri?
Yes. In your child’s settings, open Content & Privacy Restrictions, then Siri, and block Extensions. Apple says this controls whether ChatGPT can provide text and image capabilities.
Can I limit ChatGPT instead of blocking it?
Yes, for a teen of 13 or older. Linking your account to theirs lets you change settings such as quiet hours, voice and image generation. It does not let you see their chats.
